The Turks & Caicos Islands

The Turks and Caicos Islands are popularly known as British Overseas Territory, consist of the smaller Turks Islands and bigger Caicos Islands. The Turks and Caicos Islands are a part of the Bahama Island chain (or the Lucayan Archipelago). The total population is approximately 31,500 in which almost 27,000 individuals reside on Providenciales Island (often referred to as Provo). Tourism and offshore banking are the leading industries.

The islands are located north of Hispaniola Island and southeast of Mayaguana Island in the Bahama Islands chain. Since 1766, the capital of the islands is known as Cockburn Town. It is located on Grand Turk Island, about 1,042 sq. km (647 miles) east-southeast of Miami, USA. These islands have an overall land area of 430 sq. km (170 miles). Geographically, these islands are neighbors with the Bahamas, yet they are politically separated. The national flower of the country is the Turks cap cacti. Its national bird is the Brown Pelican.
